Sixteen-year-old Riley Williams has been able to see ghosts since the car crash that took her mother's life and shattered her family. Guilt-ridden over the belief that she's somehow responsible for her mom's death, Riley is desperate to see her mother's elusive spirit to gain her forgiveness.

When her father moves the family to Scotland so they can all start over, Riley believes her life couldn't get worse––that is until the ghost of nineteen-year-old Ian MacKinnon catches her purposely cutting herself. An uneasy truce quickly turns into friendship, and soon Riley's falling hard for Ian.

Riley believes her gift could help Ian end the curse that has kept him tied to the land for centuries, but that would mean letting him go forever and she's not sure she is strong enough to do that. As if her life wasn't complicated enough, the malevolent spirit of the woman who killed Ian returns and she'll stop at nothing to keep Riley from helping Ian find eternal peace.

Excerpt

I stared at him, and I don’t know what came over me, but I took the steps that separated us and I kissed him. I had meant for it only to be a chaste kiss, a you-make-me-so-happy kind of kiss, but it ended up being something completely altogether different.

I sensed his surprise, but only for an instant. The next thing I knew, his arms came around me, crushing me to him. I sighed into his mouth and he smiled against my lips before he deepened the kiss, his tongue sliding against mine, silky soft.

Exhilaration and need rushed through me as my hands flattened against his back. I could feel the play of muscle and sinew beneath my fingers. What I felt for Ian was real, and ironically he made me feel alive in a way I hadn’t been since my mom’s death.

Ian pulled away the slightest bit, looking down at me, his blue eyes intense. “We’re playing with fire, Riley Williams.”

“I don’t care.” And I didn’t care. I wanted Ian MacKinnon more than I’d ever wanted anything in my life.

The Deepest Cut The MacKinnon Curse Book 1 eBook JA Templeton

I bought this novel out of boredom one night, due to its cheap price (free, for Halloween), and the semi-interesting, guilty-pleasure story line. I read this book in about three days, and I have to say I can't help but feel a little duped. The fact that this book has an overall 4.6 stars is incredibly confusing to me. The novel showcases Riley, a sixteen year-old, left "reeling" after her mother's death (a plot point that ultimately seems to serve little purpose) and a move across the world to Scotland. But since the main character is actually rather dull and without depth, she was also given a couple more "interesting" qualities- how about a psychic medium who self-harms? Great!

I just... I don't even know where to begin. I knew I was in for an interesting read when I noticed Riley's tendency to focus on the physical appearance of herself and those around her; i.e., going into detail about how she tied her long, blonde hair into a ponytail and looked at her green eyes in the mirror. (Don't even get me started about Riley's thoughts when she sees Ian for the first time.) I understand that the author is trying to give us a decent mental image of how the characters look, but it almost always comes across as shallow, not to mention tangential. Also, the science behind a human-ghost relationship is practically nonexistent in this book. And you might say, "Well, duh; it IS nonexistent." But for a story like this, it's kind of necessary. For example, I'm still a tad confused as to how Riley could have walked right through Ian upon their first meeting, and yet later on, the two of them are having some fairly PG-13 makeout sessions without a problem. The logic behind this was never explained. AND FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD, WE KNOW IAN'S SMILE MAKES YOUR TOES CURL. We get it, you can stop talking about it. Honestly, I'm glad these two characters never got around to actually having sex; I'm not sure poor Riley would have been up to the task.

Overall, I'm incredibly disappointed with this book. The writing is pandering and sub-par, the characters have no depth and never actually change or grow. The main character falls in love with Ian almost immediately with no real explanation as to how or why, as well as several references to how he's made her a better person/changed her life for the better/etc. How? When? I see no difference between pre- and post-Ian Riley. There's almost no character development whatsoever, and what little there is is abrupt and unjustified. The cutting element of the story- which I assume is what inspired the title- is almost insultingly simplified and plays no significant role in the story or the characters. As I stated, it almost feels like an afterthought that was put in to try and add more dimensions to a lackluster main character. The plot is simple and straight-forward, with little to no surprises. I was almost hoping for something along the lines of Ian being the evil one all along, having an affair with Laria when he was young and then letting her take the blame. That wouldn't even have been a particularly interesting or unexpected plot twist, but it would have been something, at least. Instead we're left with a barely-even-there love interest (and I'm not talking about his occasionally ethereal presence. Honestly, who the hell is Ian anyway? What do I know about him? Why should I care about him, apart from the fact that he's a total hottie? I literally felt nothing when he "passed over," and even Riley only cried for four days before finding herself a new crush) and a villain who makes a few too many empty threats and is altogether more annoying than frightening. Top all that off with an ending reminiscent to that of "I Know What You Did Last Summer," and you've got yourself a waste of both time and money.

The Deepest Cut The MacKinnon Curse Book 1 eBook JA Templeton Reviews

When a story can pull you so completely out of your ordinary life and into the world where the characters live, the writer has done her job. In this instance, I was completely engrossed in Riley and Ian's story. The paranormal aspect wasn't thrust in like an afterthought but carefully woven in, giving readers plenty of time to fall in love with one ghost and become wary of another.

The Deepest Cut is a love story, but it's so much more than that. It tackles the serious topics like cutting and self-harm, the loss of a parent, and starting over in a new country. All in all, it's a story you'll want to read again and again.
I am ashamed to say I have had this book since 2012! That is what happens with my stacks and my kindle books! Anyhoo.....I could not put this book down!

The book is set in beautiful Scotland. This is a ghost story, a ghost story in Scotland full of beautiful land, creepy castles, inns and cemeteries! There is some nice romance going on as well, nothing narly though.

So... Riley and her brother Shane are moved from Portland to Scotland after their dad takes a job there and they move to a town called Braemar. Their mother died in a car accident with Riley in the car a little over a year ago and their father thought they finally needed a change.. a big change. Thus he buys an old inn! Yep.. an inn, makes you start to think of a Scottish Stanley Hotel but much older ) He says they could rent out some of the rooms if people need it.. as if the kids liked that thought! Behind this old Inn is an old Castle. I think it would be a dream to see these places!

When Riley was in the accident with her mom and woke up in the hospital she realized she could see ghosts. This is not necessarily a good thing because most of the ghosts follow you around and talk your ear off, I mean it's understandable right? Who have they had to talk to in however many years!

Riley witnesses a ghost at the Inn right away, but she ignores him, until he follows her out to a little secluded place where he finds her doing something she shouldn't be doing. She finally decides to talk to him and of course he is this hot arse ghost! Who wouldn't want that as a ghost!

She finds out he used to live in the castle behind the inn and he was killed by a servant. Now, there are relatives down through the years that own the castle and are out of town on holiday at the moment. This ghost is called Ian MacKinnon and he's been dead some 200 years!

While Riley and her brother Shane make friends with groups of kids in the town, Riley is trying to also help Ian with the curse he has on him so he can cross over. Her dad hired a caretaker named Anne Marie who is very sweet and Riley can share her ghost abilities with her. She helps all she can.

Then.... you have the evil ghost, Laria, who killed Ian, trying to stop Riley and hurting her and people around her. She is one mean ghost!

All kinds of stuff happens and the end seems to be looking good and then BAM, nope.. to be continued.. just can't keep a bad ghost down!

I really enjoyed this book! I do look forward to the other books in the series. Maybe....depends on that mean ghost!

This plot was very well written. If you had asked me before reading this book, I would probably have said the concept of falling in love with a ghost was cheesy and absurd (Like in that Casper movie) but Templeton made it anything but that. You couldn't help but to root for Ian and Riley, hoping with your heart of hearts that they'd work out...even though you knew that that was impossible lol. I especially liked the ending. It gave a sort of de ja vu feeling and made it quite obvious that this was not the end of the story but rather the beginning. I sincerely look forward to reading the other installments.

P.S Mrs.Templeton, if you're reading this, free copies of the other books in the series would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance ^_^
